    The reason for the corporate form had to do with limited liability, which you don’t mention. It was this factor that enabled corporations to raise far more capital than other business forms (e.g., sole proprietorships), which lead to large-scale enterprises such as steal factories and railroads. As for corporations being "islands of central planning" within larger economies, that overlooks the distinction between the economic means, which corporations employ, and the political means, used by real central planners, such as Soviet bureaucrats.
